TRAVEL

I was on a small plane once about to take off from Providenciales in Turks & Caicos for North Caicos Island when a large man upfront looked back at the few passengers behind him and announced, beaming, “We are all first class!” We weren’t exactly, yet I shared his enthusiasm. Camping under the stars is all very well, but luxury travel is addictive; the mere suggestion of a trip to a resort such as Cap Juluca in Anguilla or the Hotel Splendido in Portofino, and I’m primed for pampering. Then again, I’ve also found, as in “Carneros on a Whim” below, that discovering for oneself that special place, luxurious or not, is one of the true joys of travel.
